Transforming Special Education for Nonspeaking Students with Autism
Transforming Special Education for Nonspeaking Students with Autism
For nonspeaking people with autism to live in a world where they feel seen, heard, and understood; where they can share their gifts with others; where they are free to be fully themselves; where they have agency over the paths their lives will take.
To radically change the special education model for nonspeaking students through radical acceptance, radical listening, and radical belief in the unique gifts this population has to share.
We accept students exactly as they are. There is much more in our humanity that connects us than separates us.
We respect students' preferred methods of communication and listen when they share their voice.
We presume competence in our students and value their knowledge, abilities, and unique gifts.
We engage in a reciprocal learning process that recognizes every single one of us is a teacher.
